Our HistoryThe first formal worship service was conducted on March 21, 1982, in the Southeast YMCA with approximately 30 people present, thanks to the hard work of our first pastor, Rev. James G. Berry, and a small group of volunteers. Charter Sunday was held on May 23, 1982 with 85 charter members, and the name Aldersgate UMC was chosen. From August 29, 1982 until October 30, 1983, services were held in rented space in the Willowbrook Shopping Center. On October 30, 1983 the worship service started in the shopping center and ended in a temporary modular building on the church's property at the corner of Mt. Gap and Bailey Cove Road. On November 3, 1985 the church moved into the first permanent facilities, which had Sunday School classrooms and a multi-purpose room for worship and fellowship, built a sanctuary and additional classrooms in 1991, purchased the Disciple Center and land in 2000, and in 2010 have approved multi-site ministry utilizing the existing campus on Bailey Cove, and a second to be announced in 2011. Through dedicated pastors and lay leaders, Aldersgate has grown from an idea to a congregation of nearly 1000 members, as the church with a warm heart. We invite you to see how exciting church can be when the focus is simple and people are free to be passionately devoted followers of Jesus Christ!
